Distinguished and Famous people from Murtoa
🔬 John Cade
Psychiatrist John Cade was born at Murtoa in 1912. His later research in Melbourne led to the landmark 1949 report on lithium in the treatment of manic illness, a major development in psychiatric practice. That work emerged from observation and experimentation rather than a large modern pharmaceutical program. It opened a path to treatment that subsequently required further research and careful clinical development. His contribution places the small Wimmera town at the beginning of a story with consequences for mental health care around the world.
🪶 James Hill
James Hill farmed at Kewell, between Murtoa and Minyip, while assembling a remarkable natural-history collection. Over more than fifty years from 1875 he collected and prepared birds, reptiles, butterflies and eggs. The collection later came into the care of Murtoa’s Lions Club and museum, with the old water tower providing its unusual exhibition setting. It reflects the collecting practices of its period, which differ from modern wildlife protection rules. Hill’s work left a detailed record of specimens and of one local farmer’s sustained curiosity about the natural world beyond the crop paddock.
